The Kowhai is one of New Zealand's well known native trees and it's also a tree that has some of the most interesting branch formation which makes it a perfect tree for a bonsai. It has small fern-like green leaves. It has tangled juvenile growth and produces bright yellow flowers during Spring. The kowhai loves the sun and part shade.
